MADURAI:  Bulls And Men In Race: At Alanganallur, the bull-taming sport known as "Jallikattu" got underway on Tuesday with the usual sports fervour. Streams of eager young men competed against the clock to control the strong bulls and win.

Men on the slant attempted to embrace the bulls by hanging to the hump as they jumped and leaped forward from the 'Vadivasal,' the entrance to the sporting arena, packed with sand and hay.

Bulls outwitted their tamers on numerous instances, yet sometimes it was the tamers who prevailed. The winner—the bull or the man -- was proclaimed over the public address system by the organisers.

At least 15 males, including bull tamers, were hurt, but by evening, all 500 bulls and more than 300 tamers should have finished playing. There are strict security procedures in place. Here in Alanganallur, the Jallikattu is quite well-liked.

Jallikattu held at Avaniyapuram on January 15, Palamedu on January 16 and Alanganallur on January 17. While Alanganallur, located about 15-km from the city, is more famous and tends to draw larger crowds than the other two, Palamedu, which is 20-km from Madurai, has the biggest visitor gallery.
