Uttar Pradesh: Eight persons were killed and 16 were injured after a Delhi-bound bus collided with a stopped bus on the Purvanchal Expressway at Barabanki  on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences and said that the state administration is doing all necessary to assist the victims.

Both double-decker buses were travelling from Bihar to the national capital, they claimed, adding that there were 36 passengers on board at the time of the mishap.

"The accident on the Purvanchal Expressway in Barabanki is heartbreaking. My heartfelt condolences go out to anyone who have lost loved ones. Along with this, I wish everyone who has been hurt a swift recovery. The local administration is offering all feasible assistance under the supervision of the state government," Modi was reported as saying in a tweet by his office.

According to Manoj Pandey, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Barabanki, the bus travelling from Sitamarhi collided with another bus that was stopped at a roadside diner near Narendrapur Madraha village in the Loni Katra police station area. The accident happened at 4.30 a.m. Police believe the driver was drowsy.

Om Prakash Rai (33) of Samastipur, Shivdhari (42) of Madhubani, Chitnarayan (75) of Madhubani, and Kamlesh Kumar (23) of Sitamarhi, Bihar have been identified as the four deceased.

The injured passengers were sent to a community health centre in Haidergarh, where those who were critically hurt were transported to a trauma centre in Lucknow.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his condolences for the loss of life and instructed officials to ensure that the injured were properly cared for.
