Central Govt signs Karbi Peace Agreement with rebel groups

In a groundbreaking development, the Central government has signed a tripartite “Karbi Peace Accord” with 6 Karbi rebel outfits on Saturday in New Delhi. The tripartite agreement was inked among the Centre, Assam government and the six groups, People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF),  three factions of Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT) and United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), as per reports.

Over 150 members from the six outfits reached the national capital on Thursday. According to details, the Karbi groups have sought direct funding for the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, reservation of seats for ST, more powers to the council, inclusion of Karbi language in the Eighth Schedule, more MP/MLA seats.

In additon, the groups have also demanded a Rs 1500-crore package for the development of Karbi Anglong, a Sainik school, veterinary and agriculture university, central university and an airport in the district. Over a thousand militants from these groups had laid down arms in February this year. The agreement was slated for signing earlier but had fallen through.

Commenting on the development, union home minister Amit Shah said, “It’s a long wait that Karbi Anglong for peace. Modi government has not only kept northeastern states as a priority but also tried to instill peace in the region. All those who have shunned arms and joined mainstream will be taken care of. We have taken all their demands seriously and work on them is already ongoing. This agreement will be a game-changer for Karbi Anglong’s future.”
