Central Information Commission gives big relief to ED in Panama Papers leak case

New Delhi: The Central Information Commission has given a big relief to the Enforcement Directorate while hearing a petition yesterday i.e. on Tuesday. The Commission, while hearing a petition in the Panama Papers leak case, said that the ED is not obliged to reveal the names of the thieves by registering in the Panama Papers leak. In 2017, under the RTI, Durga Prasad Chaudhary sought information on the names of the thieves registered in the Panama Papers, the action was taken against them and the officials responsible for the delay in the investigation. The ED had refused to furnish tax information under Section 24 (1) after which Chaudhary filed a petition before the Commission.

During the hearing of the petition, Chaudhary referred to all the media reports and said that even though the high level of corruption prevails in it, the information was not given. The Enforcement Directorate, meanwhile, said that there were indications of a high level of corruption in it so information was not made available to them. The ED cited the exemption given to him under the law and said the matter cannot be shared.

To this, Information Commissioner Bimal Julka said, "It is decided by the Supreme Court to listen to the arguments of both the parties and that the ED has the right not to reveal the names of tax evaders." In the Panama Papers, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, examining the records of Panamian legal firm Mossack Fonseca, revealed the names of several world leaders and celebrities who allegedly deposited money in foreign companies. The governments of many countries were shaken after this leak. Names of many big personalities of India also revealed in it.
