NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor  V K  Saxena has approved the filing of a review petition in the apex court, after the Supreme Court acquitted the three accused in the 2021 Chhawla rape and murder case, sources said on Monday.

The L-G  has also given approval for the case's representation to be handled by Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta and Additional SG Aishwariya Bhati.

The 19-year-old victim's parents met with Saxena and asked him to submit a review petition challenging the accused's November 7 acquittal. Prior to this, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had taken suo moto action to ensure the welfare and security of the victim's family members when her body was discovered in Haryana, three days after she had been kidnapped, in a mutilated state. After the three were exonerated, the DCW requested Delhi Police to offer the girl's family members top-level security.

The girl was a resident of Chhawla, New Delhi. She was abducted from Qutub Vihar.

she was reportedly subjected to the utmost horrors before being killed brutally.

The Delhi Commission for Women had also requested a high-level committee to look into matters relating to subpar investigation and issues during trial in a letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

The Supreme Court emphasised the poor investigation carried out by the Delhi Police as well as other errors made during the trial when clearing the offenders.

Even though the forensic evidence incriminated the defendants, DCW Chief Swati Maliwal said in her letter that the callous way that various procedures were handled created a shred of doubt that ultimately worked in the defendants' favour because they were found not guilty.
