New Delhi: Vikram Misri, an expert on China affairs and former Ambassador of India to Beijing, has been made the country's new Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA). He will report to NSA Ajit Doval. Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, will succeed Pankaj Saran, whose term ends on December 31, 2021.

Misri's three-year term as Indian Ambassador to China also ended this month. Misri has also previously served in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The new Deputy NSA is considered to be highly experienced in the strategic conditions of the Indo-Pacific region. Misri is not the only Deputy NSA. Apart from him, Rajendra Khanna and Datta Pandasalgir are also posted in the same post. Vikram Misri, born on 7 November 1964 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, has held the charge from Under Secretary to Director in the Ministry of External Affairs in the Central Government.

Along with this, Misri has also been the personal secretary of three prime ministers of the country. He was the personal secretary to former PM Inder Kumar Gujral from April 1997 to March 1998, after which he held the responsibility of the private secretary to PM Manmohan Singh from October 2012 to May 2014. Along with this, he was also the personal secretary of PM Narendra Modi from May 2014 to July 2014.
