BANGALORE: The CID who is investigating the PSI scandal in Karnataka, has submitted a 1406-page charge sheet in the court against jailed senior IPS officer ADGP Amrit Paul, the sources stated on Thursday.

In connection with the crisis that shook the state and garnered international attention, Paul is the first senior ADGP level officer to be detained.

The First ACMM court in Bangalore has received the charge sheet. Accused Amrit Paul is being made 35th accused in the case. Deputy police superintendent B.K. Shekar, the CID investigating officer, presented 78 documents and 38 witnesses against Paul to illustrate his involvement in the fraud, the conspiracy to commit it, and the collecting of money from candidates for sub-inspector positions.

Sources claim that the CID had previously filed a charge sheet involving the affair, but it left out Paul's identity and involvement. The latest investigations have shown that the accused gave the money to his assistant and benami Shambhulinga Swamy after allegedly receiving a share of Rs. 1.35 crore from applicants for PSI positions. From him, the CID had confiscated Rs 41 lakh.

Amrit Paul, who served as the ADGP for recruiting, is accused of having permitted his junior DySP Shanthakumar and crew to engage in unethical behaviour when hiring for 545 PSI positions. According to sources, the officers assigned to the Recruitment Division Sunitha Bai, RPI Manjunath, and guards have recorded statements proving Amrit Paul's involvement.

Paul, though, insists that he was unaware of the incident and that he did not receive any compensation. In light of the incident, the opposition Congress had called for the resignation of Home Minister Araga Jnanendra.
