Civil Aviation puts SpiceJet under enhanced surveillance

New Delhi In a precautionary move, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has decided to subject SpiceJet Airlines to heightened surveillance. A senior official from the DGCA has confirmed that this measure has been taken to ensure the safety and stability of flight operations, considering the incidents that occurred during the monsoon season last year.

The objective behind this intensified surveillance is to mitigate any potential negative effects on flight operations that may arise due to financial concerns. Notably, SpiceJet was previously instructed by the regulator to reduce its total number of flights by 50% for a duration of eight weeks, following a series of safety incidents with the airline. This period was marked by the implementation of "Enhanced Surveillance." However, these restrictions were subsequently lifted on October 30 of the same year.

An evaluation conducted by the DGCA in September 2021 highlighted that SpiceJet is currently operating on a cash-and-carry basis, leading to irregular payments to approved vendors and resulting in a shortage of spare parts. Consequently, the airline has been frequently relying on Minimum Equipment Lists (MELS).

the enhanced surveillance imposed on SpiceJet Airlines serves as a proactive measure by the Civil Aviation authorities to address financial challenges and ensure the smooth functioning of flight operations.

In its request, the NCLT has invoked significant legal precedents, emphasizing the urgent requirement for clarification regarding the validity of the plea. Anticipating a positive outcome for the airline's protracted legal disputes, a spokesperson for SpiceJet expressed unwavering optimism. The spokesperson underscored the company's proactive approach in resolving all ongoing cases, foreshadowing a promising future for the airline ahead.
