Patna: Amid mounting concerns and debates over Bihar's stringent prohibition law, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has initiated a comprehensive survey. The objective is to gauge the effectiveness and public sentiment surrounding the prohibition.

Opposition Parties' Allegations
Several opposition parties in Bihar have castigated the state government, alleging that the prohibition has not yielded the desired results. Accusations range from the law's failure to prevent the sale of toxic liquor, resulting in fatalities among the economically disadvantaged, to claims that influential individuals, including politicians and officials, remain untouched.

Calls for Review and Alternatives
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a reevaluation of the prohibition policy. Additionally, former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has advocated for the adoption of the "Gujarat model" concerning alcohol regulation.

Survey Preparation Underway
Prohibition and Excise Minister Sunil Kumar disclosed that preparations for the comprehensive survey are in progress. The government is in the process of selecting an experienced agency to carry out the assessment. From multiple proposals received, a few firms have been shortlisted based on their expertise and efficiency. The aim is to ensure that the chosen agency conducts a thorough survey without inconveniencing the public. Kumar anticipates finalizing the agency within the next ten days, paving the way for the detailed assessment to commence shortly.

Context and Concerns
The urgency to evaluate the prohibition stems from the consistent seizure of illicit liquor consignments in Bihar and a persistent rise in deaths attributed to toxic alcohol consumption. Furthermore, there are reservations about the methodology employed in enforcing the ban. Criticism has been particularly vocal from figures like Jitan Ram Manjhi, who claims that marginalized communities face disproportionate penalties, while influential figures evade repercussions. Reacting to these concerns and demands, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has greenlit the survey initiative.
