India's Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has announced securing a significant international contract from North Star Shipping, a prominent UK-based operator in offshore renewables. The contract entails the construction of hybrid Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) for Siemens Gamesa, to be deployed at the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm by Scottish Power Renewables off the Suffolk coast.

CSL confirmed the order is valued at EUR 60 million and includes an option to build two additional vessels under the same agreement. This follows a previous contract earlier this year for another hybrid SOV with North Star.

The focus on sustainable energy solutions has intensified globally, particularly in offshore renewables. CSL emphasized that the 85-meter hybrid SOVs, designed by VARD AS of Norway based on the proven 4 19 design, are essential for the highly specialized offshore wind industry. These vessels feature a fully electric azimuth propulsion system and a 3D motion-compensated gangway system (walk2work), making them ideal for service, maintenance, and operational needs in offshore wind farms.

The vessels will be classed with DNV Norway and will feature a hybrid electric propulsion system powered by four diesel generator sets and a large lithium battery pack, aimed at significantly reducing emissions. They will accommodate 80 technicians and crew with high-standard interiors, boasting DNV comfort ratings and a Dynamic Positioning System.

CSL also mentioned its ongoing construction of two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) for a European client, further enhancing its presence in the global renewable energy sector.

According to CSL, North Star Shipping brings over 135 years of experience as a reliable partner in the marine environment, making it a crucial player in long-term infrastructure support.

This contract underscores CSL's commitment to sustainable solutions and reinforces its position in the high-end and niche global renewable energy segment.
