Srinagar: Commanding Officer Colonel Ashutosh Sharma along with four other security personnel were martyred in an encounter between army and militants in Rajwar area under Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir. Colonel Ashutosh Sharma was the commander of this campaign which started on Friday. Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, commanding officer of Rashtriya Rifles, took charge of Handwara area. But the colonel died in an encounter between security personnel and terrorists on Saturday evening.

This area is densely forested, so there are incidents of infiltration here. On Friday, the army received information that some terrorists were hiding in a house here, after which the army started a search operation. During this time, a fierce encounter between the army and the terrorists started. Colonel Ashutosh Sharma was also in this campaign, with whom he lost contact on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, a search was done in the encounter area, where seven bodies were found. There were bodies of five army personnel and two foreign terrorists in it.

According to the information given by the army, Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood of 21 Rashtriya Rifles, Naik Rajesh, Lance Naik Dinesh along with Sub Inspector Shakeel Qazi of Jammu and Kashmir were martyred in this horrific encounter. The martyrdom of a commanding officer in the encounter has happened after almost 5 years. Earlier, in January 2015, Colonel MN Rai was martyred in an encounter.
