Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday inspected the Rs 1,259.38 crore project of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). Stalin advised the authorities to complete the project by April 2023. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, popularly known as CMWSSB, is a statutory board of the Government of Tamil Nadu that provides water supply and sewage treatment to the city of Chennai and its surrounding areas.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister reviewed various project facilities such as seawater intake sump, product water tank, desalinated water pumping station, clarified water tank, dissolved air flow, ultra filter and reverse osmosis process, sludge thickener, lamella clarifier, etc. . Stalin oversaw the laying of pipelines carrying desalinated water. The state government said that about nine lakh people would benefit from the project. A 100 MLD desalination plant is already in operation at Nemeli near Chennai since 2013, benefitting about 10 lakh people.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board has shown its concern for the environment through its sewage treatment process. Bio-gas is produced in this process and it is being used to generate electricity to run the plants. This incidentally reduces the discharge of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere and provides carbon trading. CMWSS Board has adopted Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which results in saving of Rs 43.05 lakh per month in energy cost.
