Karnataka: The Congress party today, March 25 announced the first list of candidates for the Karnataka assembly elections.

The first list of 124 candidates includes the names of former chief minister Siddaramaiah and state party president DK Shivakumar. Siddaramaiah will run from the Kanakapura district, while DK Shivakumar will run from the Varuna district. The former CM will fight for the Varuna assembly seat in Mysuru, which is his home constituency, and KPCC leader DK Shivakumar will run for Kanakapura, as per  the party's decision.

Siddaramaiah had previously expressed interest in running for office from the Kolar constituency, but the Congress High Command ordered him to abandon the idea after disputes between the party's local leaders in the district. M Roopakala, a candidate for the party in the Kolar Gold Field district, is running.

Earlier, on March 6, DK Shivakumar praised his party's chances in the upcoming elections and asserted that the incumbent BJP would not be able to win more than 65 seats.

Priyank Kharge from Chitapur, Rizwan Arshad from Shivajinagar, Dinesh Gundu Rao from Gandhinagar, Tanveer Sait from Narasimharaja, BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan from Chamrajpet, former deputy CM G Parameshwara from Koratagere, and former minister KH Muniappa from Devanahalli were among the other names on the list of Congress leaders.

After a meeting in Delhi on March 17, the party's Central Election Committee (CEC), which is presided over by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, approved the initial list of candidates.

After the Aam Aadmi Party, which unveiled its initial list of 80 candidates on Monday, the Congress is the second party to announce their schedule of candidates for the important elections in Karnataka.
