Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Ashok Saikia, son of former Assam (late) CM and veteran Congress leader Hiteshwar Saikia, in a loan scam case. CBI has nabbed Ashok Saikia from Guwahati. The entire matter pertains to loans taken from Assam Cooperative and Agricultural Development Bank. The local court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Ashok.

The case dates to 1998, in which the investigating agency registered a case in 2001 and started an investigation. Officials said Ashok Saikia was not appearing before the court even after repeated summons were issued. Ashok Saikia will be produced before the court by CBI officials today on Monday. According to media reports, Devvrat Saikia, leader of the opposition in the Assam Assembly and Ashok's elder brother, said Ashok was taken with him by a team of CBI officers on Sunday evening.

Ashok Saikia further said, 'I repaid my loan in 2011 as per a letter from ASCARD. Through an official letter dated October 28, 2015, the general manager of the bank has stated that I have no dues. The CBI team suddenly came to my residence and said that my debt was left. Whereas before that I had not received any notice from CBI or court'. He further said, "I don't know why CBI is adding me to a hypothetical case. Only CBI or the government knows this.
