On Wednesday, Congress MPs from the Northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya met with Sonia Gandhi, the party's national president, in New Delhi. Meghalaya Congress president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala, deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, and Assam Congress MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Abdul Khaleque made up the three-member Congress MPs delegation.

The Congress MPs from Assam and Meghalaya met with Sonia Gandhi, the party's president, at a time when the grand-old party seemed to be losing ground in the Northeast. For most of the post-independence era, the Northeast was thought to be a stronghold for the Congress party. In Meghalaya, at least 12 MPs, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma, recently defected from the Congress and joined the TMC.

After leaving the Congress, Mukul Sangma stated that he and 11 other MPs made the choice to leave for the "benefit of the people of Meghalaya." The Congress has suffered a major loss in Assam, with two of its key leaders – Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain – quitting the party and joining the BJP. Both leaders have expressed their displeasure with the present leadership of the Congress, both at the state and national levels.

TMC, on the other hand, has made inroads into Assam politics by enlisting Sushmita Dev, a former prominent Congress politician in the state. Sushmita Dev, a TMC Rajya Sabha MP and a political leader in Assam's Barak Valley, was president of the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) before she left to join the TMC.
