New Delhi: In a strategic meeting held on Saturday, the leading legal minds of the Congress party convened to deliberate the highly contested issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). After an extensive discussion lasting over one and a half hours, senior Congress leaders, including P Chidambaram, Salman Khurshid, Abhishek Singhvi, Vivek Tankha, Manish Tewari, and K T S Tulsi, reached a consensus to advise the party leadership to adopt a nuanced position on the matter. They emphasized the importance of thoroughly reviewing the draft Bill, should the government propose such legislation in Parliament, before declaring the party's stance.

According to reliable sources, the leaders acknowledged the layered and complex nature of the UCC and advocated for the party to adopt a thoughtful and nuanced approach. Recognizing the BJP's likely expectation for a clear position in favor or against the UCC, the Congress leaders stressed the need to consider various aspects before finalizing their stance.

Earlier this month, the Congress had decided to refrain from prematurely opposing the UCC without a concrete draft Bill presented by the BJP government. The leaders who attended the meeting stated that while the party opposes the concept of uniformity and perceives the UCC as "an assault on diversity," they support reforms in personal laws, particularly in terms of gender parity.

"We are in favor of aspects like equality of inheritance. However, we firmly oppose the imposition of uniformity. The government's intention is crucial. We need to assess whether the government genuinely aims to reform personal laws or intends to target specific communities for political gain," explained a senior Congress leader.

When asked about the party's nuanced position, one leader responded, "We can support certain provisions but, overall, we will oppose any attempt to enforce uniformity as it contradicts our pluralistic values and the essence of diversity."

The Congress has consistently maintained that discussions surrounding the UCC are a "diversionary tactic by the government and an attempt at dog whistle politics." The party aims to steer clear of falling into "the BJP trap."

Although the central government has not yet indicated when it plans to introduce a Bill on the UCC, the opposition parties have already shown divided opinions on the matter. While the AAP and the Shiv Sena (UBT) have expressed support for the UCC in principle, the BSP has stated that it is not opposed to the UCC but opposes the BJP's current implementation approach.
