Court rejects middleman Deepak Talwar's anticipatory bail plea

NEW DELHI: After the court rejected the anticipatory bail plea, middleman Deepak Talwar was arrested by the CBI in the court room. The CBI detained middleman Deepak Talwar on Friday in connection with an aviation scam. He has been arrested for financial irregularities in the purchase of aircraft for Air India and Indian Airlines.

All these aircraft were purchased during the UPA regime. The agency wants 14 days judicial custody of Talwar for questioning. The court will decide on the matter later in the day. Talwar is currently in judicial custody in a money laundering case related to the scam. Talwar has reportedly played a role in some aircraft deals during the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.

That is why he is under investigation of the agency. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate have registered a case against Talwar in criminal cases of corruption. On the other hand, the Income Tax Department has charged him with tax evasion. Earlier on February 19, the CBI had moved the Delhi High Court seeking custody of Deepak Talwar for questioning in a case relating to alleged violation of The Foreign Grants Act, FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act).

A bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Anu Malhotra sought response from the Non-Sakar Organisation (NGO) Advantage India Private India and its secretary Manish Garg on the CBI's plea. Talwar was earlier the president of this organization. The CBI told the court that the NGO had received a foreign contribution of Rs 90.72 crore during 2012 to 2013 and 2015 to 2016. The CBI had told the court that the probe revealed that the foreign money received by the NGO was misused and used for some other purposes.
