Covid Updates: India records 16,935 new cases, 51 fatalities

New Delhi:  The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday registered a minor decline in the number of COVID cases as 16,935 new infections were recorded. On Sunday, India registered 20,528 covid infections.

The overall number of cases has increased to 4,37,67,534 on account of the new COVID-19 cases, including 1,44,264 active cases. Of the overall cases, the active cases make about 0.33 percent.

The official data also showed that 51 deaths brought India's COVID-19 death toll to 5,25,760.  16,069 new recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 4,30,97,510, the recovery rate is currently at 98.47%. According to the ministry, 2,61,470 COVID-19 tests were performed in the previous 24 hours, with a daily positivity rate of 6.48 percent noted. 
4,46,671 doses of the COVID-19 immunisation have been given within the past 24 hours. The nationwide immunisation effort has resulted in the administration of more than 200 billion vaccine doses in total (92.61 billion second doses and 5.67 billion precaution doses).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Sunday that India has "made history again" after reaching a significant milestone by giving out two billion doses of vaccination in just 18 months. The Prime minister congratulated all Indians for reaching a "unique figure" and stated he is "proud of all who helped make India's immunisation drive unparalleled in scope and speed." It has "strengthened the global struggle against COVID-19," he said.
