Kanpur: A tragic incident has surfaced in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where three individuals succumbed to suffocation caused by smoke emanating from a stove, leading to critical conditions for two others. The incident occurred due to the room being filled with smoke overnight. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene, initiating an investigation. The bodies were taken into custody for post-mortem, and the forensic team collected evidence from the incident site.

The tragedy unfolded in Basanti Nagar, within the Juhi police station area. Sudhir Mishra explained that, amid extreme cold late at night, a fireplace was left burning in the room, causing it to fill with smoke. The next morning, 80-year-old Puranchandra Sharma, 78-year-old Mithilesh Sharma, and 52-year-old Narendra Sharma, along with 20-year-old Nimisha and 18-year-old Dhruv, were found unconscious. They were promptly taken to the hospital, where doctors declared the father, mother, and elder brother dead. Nimisha and Dhruv remain in critical condition. Top officers, along with the police force, reached the spot to investigate the matter, with the forensic team examining the incident site.

To combat severe cold, people are resorting to leaving fires burning in their rooms, a practice that proves to be extremely perilous. In recent days, this mistake has led to numerous fatalities in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lakhimpur Kheri and Fatehpur. An example is Dilip Nishad from Chakmali, also known as Vithua village in the Gagaha area, who works in the Gulf for his livelihood. On January 16, his wife Radhika, five-year-old son Ansh, and three-year-old daughter Antika, left a bonfire burning overnight to ward off the cold. Unfortunately, both children perished, and the mother lost consciousness due to the room filling with smoke.
