Data Privacy Day known as Data Protection Day in Europe is an international event that takes place on January 28 every year. Data Privacy Day aims to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices. It is currently celebrated in the United States, Canada, Israel and 47 European countries.

Data Privacy Day's educational initiative was basically focused on businesses as well as users focusing online about the importance of protecting the privacy of their personal information, especially in terms of social networking. The educational focus to include families, consumers and businesses has expanded over the years. In addition to its educational initiative, Data Privacy Day promotes events and activities that encourage the development of technology tools that promote personal control over personally identifiable information, encouraging compliance with privacy laws and regulations and create a dialogue among stakeholders interested in advancing data protection and privacy. The international festival offers many opportunities for collaboration between governments, industry, education, nonprofits, privacy professionals and teachers.

The Convention for the Protection of Persons in Connection with the Automatic Processing of Personal Data was opened on 28 January 1981 for signature by the Council of Europe. The conference is currently in the process of being updated to reflect new legal challenges caused by technological developments. The Convention on Cybercrime is also protecting the integrity of data systems and thus privacy in cyberspace. Privacy, including data security, is also protected by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The day was organized by the Council of Europe for the first time in 2007 as European Data Protection Day. Two years later, on January 26, 2009, the United States House of Representatives declared House Resolution H.R. 31 as national data privacy day on January 28 with a vote of 402 –0. On January 28, 2009, the Senate also recognized Senate Resolution 25 as National Data Privacy Day on January 28, 2009. The United States Senate also recognized data privacy days in 2010 and 2011.
