New Delhi: Air quality has been recorded in the 'poor' category on Monday morning in the country's capital and adjoining areas and the levels of microscopic particles - PM2.5 and PM10 - were the highest so far this season. Safar, an air quality monitoring mechanism of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that the air quality index is likely to improve lightly due to changes in air trend in the coming days.

The overall air quality index was 240 at 10 am in the capital. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AUI) on Sundays and Saturdays was 216 and 221 respectively. AQI at Jahangirpuri and Vivek Vihar were 301 and 316 respectively which was recorded in the "extremely bad" category. Air quality is good between 0 to 50, satisfactory from 51 to 100, average from 101 to 200, bad from 201 to 300, extremely bad from 301 to 400 and is placed in a serious category between 401 to 500.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, the level of PM10 in Delhi-NCR at 9 am was 242 micrograms per cubic meter, the largest ever figure in this season. PM10 levels in India, which are less than 100 micrograms per cubic meter, are considered to be in the safe category.
