New Delhi: On Saturday, August 31, a Delhi court remanded six individuals to four days of custody with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a tragic incident where three civil services aspirants drowned at a coaching centre in Old Rajender Nagar last month.

The victims, Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalvin, lost their lives when heavy flooding occurred in the basement of the Rau’s IAS Study Circle on the evening of July 27. The court ordered that the accused—Abhishek Gupta, Deshpal Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh, and Parvinder Singh—be held in custody until September 4 for further questioning.

The CBI sought this custody to advance its investigation, arguing that more in-depth interrogation of the accused is necessary. This request follows the high court’s decision on August 2 to transfer the case from the Delhi police to the CBI due to concerns over the initial investigation's quality.

According to the CBI, the basement, which was intended for parking and storage as per the building's occupancy certificate, was being improperly used as a library and exam hall. The agency also highlighted that the coaching centre was operating without a fire safety certificate. During the investigation, it was revealed that the building's owner, Gupta, had been issued a show cause notice for violating Delhi’s Master Plan and misusing the property. Gupta responded by stating that a fire safety certificate was applied for and issued on July 9, 2024.

Defense lawyers opposed the remand, arguing that the CBI had not provided specific reasons for the need for custody.
