NEW DELHI: Delhi residents will soon have the convenience of purchasing bus tickets through WhatsApp, as the Kejriwal government plans to introduce a WhatsApp-based ticketing system in the city. Transport officials revealed that the system is in the works for both Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses.

Following the success of a similar initiative with the Delhi Metro earlier this year, where the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) launched a WhatsApp-based ticketing system, the government aims to extend this digital ticketing feature to buses. The WhatsApp ticketing system will have limitations on the number of tickets users can generate.

To buy tickets for the Delhi Metro, passengers need to send a message containing 'Hi' to 91 9650855800 on WhatsApp or scan a QR code provided. This simple process allows smartphone users to purchase metro tickets across all lines. However, it's important to note that ticket cancellations are not permitted with this WhatsApp-based system. Additionally, a slight convenience fee applies to credit and debit card transactions, while UPI-based transactions are exempt from any additional fees.

The timings for booking Delhi Metro tickets through WhatsApp are between 6 am to 9 pm for all lines, and from 4 am to 11 pm for the Airport Line (Orange Line). The WhatsApp chatbot facilitating this service is available in English and Hindi, making it user-friendly for a diverse range of metro riders.

Vikas Kumar, the Managing Director of DMRC, emphasized that WhatsApp, being a popular messaging platform among Indians, will make purchasing a metro ticket as simple as messaging a friend or family member.

Ravi Garg, Director of Business Messaging at Meta in India, mentioned in an official statement, "Our aim is to streamline the transit experience for WhatsApp users, and this initiative is another step towards achieving that goal."
