New Delhi: The Excise Department of Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal government has allowed licensed liquor vendors to shift the allotted liquor shops in non-conforming areas of the city to authorized market places in the same area. Official sources have given information in this regard on Thursday. Under the new excise policy of the Delhi government that came into effect in November 2020, the capital has been divided into 32 zones, in which licenses have been given to open 849 liquor shops through open tenders.

Last year, the Delhi government had also decided to allow two liquor shops to open in non-conforming areas wards, which are largely unauthorized colonies in the city. After the decision of the Excise Department to allow the shifting of liquor shops allotted to retail licensees from non-conforming areas to authorized commercial areas in an area, now more than 130 such stores will be able to open.

Since the implementation of the new excise policy, liquor shops could not open in the non-conforming area amid protests from various quarters including Delhi BJP. The three BJP-ruled municipal corporations recently started sealing these liquor shops in non-conforming areas in violation of the norms of the Delhi Master Plan. Sources said that around 30 such shops were sealed, while notices were sent to several others.
