NEW DELHI: The deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, on Saturday spoke on the restoration of the old liquor policy in Delhi and said it will be back in force from August 1. 

He also slammed the BJP for "threatening shops and cops." His remarks come after the Delhi government's decision to reinstate retail booze sales for a period of six months. Just two days remained before the present excise regime expired when the decision was made.

Sisodia also said that by threatening Delhi's business owners and law enforcement, the BJP, like Gujarat, aims to encourage the selling of fake, off-duty alcohol.

The deputy CM  also said that prior to the introduction of excise policy 2021–22, the majority of the liquor stores in Delhi were managed by the government and were rife with corruption.

The government used to receive about  Rs 6,000 crore in revenue from 850 liquor stores before we implemented a new policy, but with the new policy, our government would have received more than Rs 9,000 crore with the same number of stores, Sisodia claimed.

I have instructed the chief secretary to ensure that there is no chaso during the transition time, we have cancelled the new excise policy, and we have directed the opening of government liquor stores, he continued.

However, after Lt. governor's recommendation that Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) look into the current excise policy, the Delhi government has opted to return to the previous system of selling alcohol.
