AMARAVATI: On Friday, Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur took the oath of office as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, becoming the sixth to hold this position.
The oath-taking ceremony, administered by State Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, was attended by Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, cabinet members, leader of the opposition N. Chandrababu Nadu, high court judges, and other senior officials.
Appointed by the Central government, Justice Thakur was previously a judge of the Bombay High Court before being assigned as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, succeeding Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, who was elevated to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Thakur's appointment on July 5, filling the vacancy created after Justice Mishra's elevation on May 19.
Justice Thakur's legal journey began in 1989 when he completed his LLB from Jammu University and enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. Later, in 2010, his enrollment was transferred to the Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2013, he became a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and, in June 2022, was transferred to the Bombay High Court, where he served as the senior-most judge.
The establishment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court took place on January 1, 2019, following a Presidential Order issued after the state's bifurcation.
