Chennai: DMK Member of Parliament (MP), Kanimozhi, has drawn attention to a pressing concern regarding the language proficiency of railway staff in Tamil Nadu. In a letter addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Kanimozhi highlighted the challenges faced by passengers due to a lack of staff proficient in Tamil or English at railway stations across the state. This issue came to the forefront following an incident at Kovilpatti railway station, situated in Kanimozhi's constituency, where passengers encountered significant difficulties due to the staff's inability to comprehend Tamil.
The MP emphasized the essential nature of appointing railway employees who possess fluency in either Tamil or English to ensure effective service delivery and communication with passengers. The incident at Kovilpatti station exemplified the consequences of inadequate language skills among railway staff, as passengers were unable to complete Tatkal mode reservations due to the booking clerk's inability to understand forms filled out in Tamil or English.
Despite complaints made to the station master regarding the situation, Kanimozhi expressed frustration that no action was taken to rectify the issue or provide assistance to the affected passengers. This lack of response left passengers feeling helpless and underscored the urgent need for a resolution to ensure seamless service provision at railway stations throughout Tamil Nadu.
In her letter to the Union Railway Minister, Kanimozhi reiterated the importance of addressing this matter promptly and urged for the immediate appointment of booking clerks with a proficient understanding of Tamil or English in railway stations across the state. By doing so, she emphasized, railway services could effectively cater to the linguistic diversity of Tamil Nadu's population and alleviate the challenges faced by passengers due to language barriers.
