New Delhi: A 56-year-old man made a special plea by approaching the Delhi High Court on Monday. This man has asked the court not to allow his wife, daughter and son-in-law to perform his last rites after his death. The petitioner, who is suffering from a cardiac ailment, has claimed in the petition filed in the Delhi High Court that his family has treated him cruelly, which has caused him great grief. Therefore, after his death, his body should not be handed over to his family or any relative.

In the petition, the person has said that after his death, instead his body should be handed over to the person whom he treats like his son. This is the person who took care of him. In the condition of not getting out of bed, this person has even cleaned his toilet. Keeping in view the bad relations between the petitioner and his family members, Justice Yashwant Verma has asked the advocate of the Delhi Government to take directions on the petition challenging the standard operating procedure of mortuaries which provides for the relatives of the deceased right over his dead body.

In the petition filed through advocates Vishweshwar Srivastava and Manoj Kumar Gautam, the petitioner said that he only wants to exercise his right to life, right to fair treatment and respect. ''The petitioner has been treated very cruelly and badly by his wife and daughter, which has caused great sorrow to him," the petition said. He does not know when he will die so he does not want his wife, daughter or son-in-law to claim his dead body under the Delhi government's standard operating procedure (SOP). The petitioner said that he is not in good health and wants to clarify that after his death, his body should not be handed over to his family or any relative. The petition expressed a desire that his body be handed over to another person whom he treats as his son. The same person has taken care of the petitioner in case he is unable to get up from the bed.
