BAGHDAD: According to the regional Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), an unidentified drone crashed in the north of Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous province of Kurdistan, injuring three people. The drone reportedly exploded on Wednesday.

The drone exploded at 9:35 pm, after colliding with a restaurant in Erbil, around 375 kilometres north of Baghdad, according to the CTS statement. The explosion caused damage the restaurant premises and many surrounding civilian cars, the report added.

Meanwhile, Saman Barzanji, the Kurdistan Regional Government's Health Minister, told reporters that the wounded had just minor injuries.

Although no group has claimed credit for the attack, militias frequently use rockets or drones to attack targets in the Kurdistan area. The UAE consulate is only a few hundred metres from the attack location, which is also around three kilometres (two miles) from a building site where the new US consulate will open next year.

Several incidents have occurred in Erbil and the autonomous province of Kurdistan in recent months.
