New Delhi: Kolkata will witness a historic change in Durga Puja this year. Kolkata's 66 Palli Durga Puja Committee has taken a historic decision saying that this year the club's Durga Puja will replace the male priest with 4 women priests. The decision comes after the death of a veteran male priest of the puja committee late last year.

Tell you that in the second week of October there will be a five-day puja of Mother Durga and the Durga Puja of Bengal is famous all over the world. Approximate 10 years ago, Nandini, Ruma, Seemanthi, and Polomi formed a group called 'Shubhamstu,' a group that has been organizing various social and religious events but will perform Durga Puja rituals as a priest for the first time. Women will perform all the rituals organized by the 66 Palli Durga Puja Samiti in Kolkata.

In this regard, Nandini says, "We never thought we would ever worship as priests. When we started, it wasn't in our minds. Ruma and I are Sanskrit teachers and we realized that the younger generation is interested in these rituals and they should be told what they mean.''
