India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar took a significant meeting during his current visit to Japan. He met with Akie Abe, the wife of the late former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in Tokyo. This meeting holds special significance as it marks almost two years since Shinzo Abe's passing. During the meeting, Jaishankar handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Akie Abe, expressing condolences for the loss of Abe's mother.

Sharing the momentous encounter with Abe's wife, Jaishankar expressed his sentiments. "Being my first visit to Tokyo after the demise of PM Shinzo Abe, met with his wife, Mrs. Akie Abe. Recalled PM Shinzo Abe’s invaluable contribution to the advancement of India-Japan relations," he remarked.

Shinzo Abe's tragic assassination on July 8, 2022, during an election campaign speech shocked the world. The assailant, Tetsuya Yamagami, was promptly arrested at the scene. Yamagami faced charges of murder and violations of gun control laws. His motives were reportedly linked to his disdain for a religious group allegedly associated with Abe.

Jaishankar's ongoing visit to Japan includes a three-day agenda from March 6 to 8. A highlight of his trip was co-chairing the 16th India-Japan Foreign Ministers Strategic Dialogue in Tokyo alongside his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa. The discussions between the two leaders emphasized the necessity for bilateral relations to adapt to evolving geopolitical and geo-economic trends. They also explored avenues for collaboration in emerging technologies and other areas of mutual interest.

Reflecting on the productive meeting, Jaishankar shared his thoughts on social media. "A great meeting with Japanese FM @Kamikawa_Yoko, as we co-chaired the 16th India-Japan FMs Strategic Dialogue in Tokyo today. Pleased to note the steady progress of our bilateral partnership in different domains. Discussed new and ambitious areas of expansion, including emerging technologies," he wrote.

Moreover, both leaders acknowledged the stabilizing role their countries can play in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. They exchanged views on the international landscape, affirming India and Japan's commitment to being steadfast partners in navigating towards a multipolar world.
