Ankara: The number of people who died due to a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Turkey (Turkey) last week has increased to 36, while 1,607 people are said to be injured. According to the news agency Xinhua, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) on Sunday said that a total of 45 people were rescued from the debris and search and rescue operations are going on.
According to AFAD, the Earthquake struck at a depth of 6.75 km in Elajig province at 8.55 am on January 24 and 788 mild tremors were felt after that. According to AFAD, a study of a total of 1,521 constructions by experts in Elajig and nearby Malatya province showed that at least 76 buildings were completely destroyed and 645 others severely damaged.
Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that most of the damage has been done in the villages of Elajig. He told the press people, "We will find out the scope of the damage there and will soon start the construction work." The AFAD statement also stated that around 10,000 tents for the families were sent to the area, and more than 4,200 of them were already planted. The agency has also shared bank information on its website for those citizens who want to give money for the survivors of the earthquake.
