Chennai: In the early hours of Monday, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck 59 kilometres southwest of Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

The depth of the quake that struck at 4.17 a.m. was 25 kilometres, according to the National Center for Seismology. No damage has yet been detected, according to the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority. The earthquakes were detected in the border areas between Vellore and Tirupattur districts, according to Vellore District Collector Kumaravel Pandian.

Vellore had been battered by heavy rains for the preceding few days, and concrete structures that were decades old were demolished in many sections of the district because they could have collapsed at any moment. Since November 1, nineteen residences in the district have been washed away by the rains, causing the District Collector to order the destruction of properties that were on the verge of collapsing.

Meanwhile, in the light of rain, the  India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Andhra Pradesh predicting heavy rainfall. The 'Orange' alert has been issued for four districts, including Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor, and Kadapa.
