Maharashtra: A moderate-intensity earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale shook the district of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology on Wednesday.

In a tweet, the National Center for Seismology stated that the earthquake occurred on August 16, 2023, at 06:45:05 IST. The quake had a latitude of 17.19 and longitude of 73.79, with a depth of 5 km. The epicenter was located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. Kolhapur, situated in the western region of Maharashtra, is approximately 375 km away from Mumbai.

Earlier, on August 14, a more powerful earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale rattled the entire northeastern region of India. The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake struck at 8:19 PM, with its epicenter 49 km southeast of Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. No casualties were reported, and the earthquake had a depth of 16 kilometers. The tremors were felt across Meghalaya, as well as in parts of Assam and West Bengal.

Meanwhile, another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 5.5, hit the border area between northeast India and Bangladesh on Monday, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) and was located 18 km northwest of Karimganj in Assam state. Additionally, it was about 36 kilometers (22.3 miles) northeast of Sylhet in Bangladesh.
