NEW DELHI: In light of the dropping number of Covid cases, the Election Commission will conduct a review meeting today to discuss the existing restriction on physical protests.
Today, at 11 a.m., the Union Health Secretary is expected to meet with the poll body virtually. The health secretaries of five poll-bound states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur, are expected to attend the virtual meeting. After assessing the current Covid situation in poll-bound states, the poll board will make a judgment on existing limits on political gatherings.
In the wake of the Covid cases, the Election Commission extended the ban on physical rallies and roadshows until January 31. After a review meeting with the Health Ministry and poll-bound states, the poll body allowed physical meetings of political parties or contesting candidates in designated open spaces with some restrictions.
Assembly elections are set to begin on February 10 in five poll-bound states. Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven phases, whereas Manipur will vote in two phases, and Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa will vote in a single phase for assembly elections.
