Karnataka: A two-year-old elephant calf at Sakrebailu elephant camp near Shivamogga has been named after actor Puneeth Rajkumar, who passed away recently. During his September visit to the camp, the actor spent some time with the calf. I.M.Nagaraj, the Deputy Conservator of Forests, and others picked his name in honour of the actor.

The youngster was weaned from his mother Nethra on Wednesday, as per camp tradition, with the assistance of other trained elephants. The operation began at 11:30 a.m. and lasted until 3:00 p.m. Mr.Nagaraj told the reporters that the calf was intended to be separated when it reached the age of two. Rains, however, caused a three-month delay in the procedure. "We'll keep the calf in isolation until it's ready to be trained." It will be impossible to control it later if it is not separated from its mother at this age," he stated.

The calf is elephant Nethra's fourth child. Other activities are impossible for the mother unless she is isolated from her calf. "In the wild, newborn elephants usually stay with their mothers for up to six years." We separate the newborn elephant from its mother in the elephant camps so that it can be trained. According to Vinay, a veterinarian, "the newborn requires some time to acclimate to the situation."
