Bengaluru: Karnataka Police's Cyber Crime wing detained a 20-year-old teenager on Wednesday for posting an offensive message on social media about the state government's liquor ban, which was enacted as a precautionary step following the death of Kannada star Puneeth Rajkumar.

The BSc student from a private institution in Andhra Pradesh was taken up from his home in north Bengaluru. After establishing that the disparaging remark and a photograph were posted from his phone, the police claimed he was taken into jail. The accused student, on the other hand, has rejected the charge, claiming that his social media account was hacked and the original post was twisted.

The post, which was uploaded on October 30, went viral and garnered harsh criticism from followers of the late actor, prompting a formal complaint. The fans circulated the message around politicians, police officers, and other officials, urging them to take action. Police Commissioner Kamal Pant was also tagged. The police have booked the accused student under IPC Section 153 and IT Act, 2000.
