The Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi is still emitting smoke after a massive fire erupted on Sunday evening. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed that the fire was caused by gas generated in the dumping yard, though no casualties have been reported. Eight fire engines were dispatched to extinguish the flames, which the fire service is still working to fully control. Residents living near the landfill report throat irritation and coughing from the smoke, noting that such problems have persisted since the 1990s. They also complain of eye irritation and breathing difficulties, with some pointing out a lack of attention to their health issues from both the Delhi and central governments.

Locals criticized the administration for taking no action to address the smoke and urge the government to intervene. One resident stated that the smoke has made it difficult for them to breathe, speak, and go outside, with some expressing fear over potential casualties as in previous fires at the landfill.Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi took to social media to assert that all officers were on-site and the situation was under control. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government for failing to keep its promise to clear the Ghazipur landfill by the end of 2023. The BJP claims that smoke from the fire has spread across the area, causing inconvenience to residents and businesses.
