Chennai: On the 74th anniversary of her birth, Tamil Nadu's former Chief Minister and iconic leader J Jayalalithaa received heartfelt tributes. Floral tributes were offered to a portrait of the six-time Chief Minister placed at her ornamented statue on Kamarajar Road by the state government, led by Secretary of Tamil Development and Information Department Mahesan Kasirajan and Director of DIPR V P Jeyaseelan.

AIADMK leaders: Party coordinator O Panneerselvam and co-coordinator K Palaniswami led the party in paying floral tributes to their leader, whom they affectionately refer to as Amma and Puratchi Thalaivi (revolutionary leader).

Jayalalithaa (February 24, 1948 – December 5, 2016) was a key figure in ensuring Tamil Nadu's 69 percent reservation. Her numerous welfare programmes, such as the Amma canteen, Amma pharmacy, and gold for Thali (mangalsutra) for destitute women, as well as free laptops for students, were an astounding success with the public.

Among those who offered floral tributes to the leader were Tamil Nadu BJP chairman K Annamalai, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran, and her erstwhile aide V K Sasikala.

Today, her niece and nephew J Deepa and Deepak paid floral tributes to a decked portrait of Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden apartment.
