NEW DELHI: Father and son acquitted of dowry death charges after 28 years of the legal battle. The Uttarakhand High Court had sentenced the father and his son to seven years in jail in connection with the dowry death case, which was dismissed by the apex court.

On June 5, 1991, a woman set herself on fire and committed suicide. She had not been married for seven years till that time.

The woman's husband and father-in-law were detained by the police on a complaint by her parents for abetting her suicide. The court later converted the case into a dowry death charge. The Uttarakhand High Court has convicted the accused in the dowry death case, but the Apex Court in its judgement has held that there is no evidence to prove that the deceased woman was persecuted by her in-laws and demanded dowry.

It is a law that if a woman dies in suspicious circumstances within seven years of her marriage or commits suicide, the police can register a dowry death case against the in-laws and arrest them on the complaint of the parents.
