Chatra: A fire broke out in two shops built under a two-storey house in Jharkhand's Chatra district in the wee hours of Budhwar. The fire took a severe form and a 90-year-old man died, while a child was seriously injured due to burns. The police have reported this. A police officer said that the incident took place in the Gudri Bazar area of the district and the fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit. He said that a fire department team and locals brought the fire under control after six hours of hard work.
The shop owners, Santan Keshari and Ashok Keshari, said their family lives on the topmost floor of the two-storey building, after the fire broke out at around 3 am on Wednesday, they all somehow managed to escape from the roof to the adjacent house. But his 90-year-old father Mahadev Saw and his 5-year-old niece were sleeping in a room on the ground floor from where the fire broke out.
The police officer said that the old man died of burn injuries while the child was seriously injured. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors referred her to a medical centre in the Hazaribagh district. The family has 3 shops on the ground floor, including a grocery store. As soon as the incident was reported, Chatra district Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan, District Magistrate Mamtaz Ansari and Deputy Commissioner of Police (SDPO) Avinash Kumar rushed to the spot. The victim's family claimed that property worth Rs 1 crore, including Rs 3 lakh cash kept in the shop, was gutted.
