India's First Woman DGP Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya Dies

Mumbai: Uttarakhand and the country's first woman Director General of Police (DGP) Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya have passed away. She had been sick for a few days. Kanchan breathed her last at a hospital in Mumbai. 

Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, a 1973 batch woman IPS officer, made history in 2004 when she became the DGP of Uttarakhand.

On October 31, 2007, she retired as Director General of Police. Her entire career in the police service was immaculate. After her retirement, she took a plunge into politics and unsuccessfully contested from Haridwar constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket. Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya was the second woman IPS officer in the country after Kiran Bedi. She was originally a resident of Himachal Pradesh.

Kanchan Chaudhary completed his studies at the Government Women's College, Amritsar. On the other hand, he received post-graduation education in English literature from Delhi-University. Inspired by his life, a serial 'Udaan' has also been aired on Doordarshan. She was selected to represent India at the Interpol meeting held in Mexico in 2004. She has also been awarded the 'President's Medal' for prestigious services in 1997.
