Tel Aviv: Five Syrian soldiers were killed in an Israeli airstrike near Damascus airport, according to Syrian state media.
"The aggression resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and some material damage," a military source told Syria's state-run news agency SANA on Saturday.
The morning strike was carried out "from the north-east of Lake Tiberias, targeting Damascus Airport and some points south of Damascus," according to the statement.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, confirmed that five Syrian soldiers and two Iran-backed fighters were killed in the attacks.
According to the monitor, which relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria, Israel targeted the Damascus airport and Iranian-backed groups in the vicinity.
Last month, three soldiers were killed in an Israeli attack in the countryside around the capital and south of the coastal Tartus province.
Israeli air strikes captured Damascus airport for nearly two weeks in June.
Israeli airstrikes have struck the Aleppo airport twice in the past month.
According to the Rights Monitor at the time, the attacks targeted weapons depots belonging to Iran-backed militias.
Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against its northern neighbor, targeting both government troops and allied Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters.
Although Israel rarely comments on individual attacks, it has admitted to carrying out hundreds. It claims that its air campaign is necessary to prevent arch enemy Iran from gaining a foothold on its border.
