In a tragic incident on Thursday afternoon, an avalanche struck a group of foreign skiers at Khilan Marg on Afarwat Peak in the renowned ski destination of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. As per officials, one skier lost their life, while three others were successfully rescued. Regrettably, one skier remains missing. The deceased skier is reported to be of Russian nationality.

The avalanche engulfed Khilan Marg, trapping a total of five foreign skiers. Promptly, a large-scale rescue operation was initiated at the site. An official confirmed the death of one skier and the safe retrieval of three others. Efforts are currently underway to locate the missing skier believed to be buried under the snow.

The identities of the skiers, all presumed to be foreigners, have not been disclosed yet. Responding to the emergency, members of the High Altitude Warfare School rushed to the avalanche site in Gulmarg to assist in the rescue operation.

In the wake of this distressing event, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah expressed his concerns on social media, stating, "While the details are still emerging, reports suggest that some skiers are missing following an avalanche near Gulmarg. It seems they were skiing off designated paths or groomed slopes in the 'backcountry'. Days like today remind us of the inherent risks associated with skiing, despite its enjoyment and breathtaking views. Let us hope and pray for the safe recovery of all missing skiers and that the reports of casualties turn out to be untrue."
