Guwahati: On January 27, former Assam Youth Congress President Angkita Dutta confirmed her decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on January 28. Dutta, previously expelled from the Congress, alleged harassment by Indian Youth Congress President Srinivas BV, which led to her complaint and subsequent removal from the party. Over 100 of Dutta's supporters will also join the BJP in Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed her into the party, emphasizing the desire for talented, non-political youth to contribute to BJP's development plans.
Dutta filed a harassment complaint against Srinivas in April 2023, leading to a case and subsequent interim relief for Srinivas from the Supreme Court. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Dutta of filing the complaint under CM Sarma's influence, escalating the matter to a legal issue.
During Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Dutta attempted to meet Rahul Gandhi for justice but was denied. Expressing disappointment, she claimed the Congress leadership ignored her concerns, leading to her removal without resolution. She acknowledged CM Sarma for supporting her during the ordeal.
Former Congress minister Bismita Gogoi is also expected to join the BJP, having faced discrimination after losing the 2021 assembly elections. Congress Chief for Assam, Bhupen Kumar Borah, stated that the party was unconcerned about Dutta joining another party, as she was no longer part of Congress.
Angkita Dutta, daughter of late Congress leader Anjan Dutta, served as the head of the Assam Youth Congress and was expelled in April 2023 for alleged anti-party activities related to her harassment complaint against Srinivas BV. The Congress legal cell issued a notice, calling her allegations false and frivolous. In her tweets and subsequent police complaint, Dutta detailed months of harassment by Srinivas BV and criticized the Congress's lack of interest in her case.
