Bangalore: Former CM Jagdish Shettar, who left the BJP and joined the Congress before the Karnataka assembly elections, has been defeated in the election. He has been defeated by BJP candidate Mahesh Tenginkai. Jagadish Shettar belongs to the influential Lingayat community there. Jagadish Shettar was contesting from Hubli Dharwad Central seat. Actually, BJP did not give him ticket in this election. After this, he rebelled and joined the Congress. He was earlier BJP's MLA from this seat. Not only this, Shettar also became the CM in the BJP government.

Jagadish Shettar is counted among the strong leaders of the Lingayat community. Shettar is considered to have a good hold in the Lingayat community after BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa. BJP's Mahesh Tengikanai, who defeated Jagadish Shettar, has been calling himself Shettar's disciple during the election campaign. The seat is Lingayat dominated and Tenginkai also belongs to the Lingayat community. It is believed that he also has a lot of hold here. At the time of writing, Jagadish Shettar was second in terms of votes. According to the Election Commission data, his disciple Mahesh, who won the election from this seat, got a total of 64,910 votes, which is 66.9 percent of the total votes. Whereas, Congress leader Jagadish Shettar could get only 29,340 votes.

Let us inform that a total of 16 candidates were in the fray on this seat, out of which 6 people contested as independents. Shettar has been MLA for 6 consecutive terms and has won from this seat 3 times. Karnataka Congress unit chief DK Shivakumar got a landslide victory from Kanakapura seat. He defeated his rival candidate by more than 1.5 lakh votes. This is his 8th consecutive win. DK Shivakumar is also a strong contender for the post of CM. At the same time, former CM Siddaramaiah has also won the election from Varuna seat and he is also a contender for the post of CM. Now it has to be seen that out of these two leaders, whom does the Congress make the CM.
