SAN JOSE: According to the poll latest data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, former Costa Rican President Jose Maria Figueres is leading the country's presidential election, but a runoff is possible because no clear winner has emerged as of Monday (TSE).
With 79.96 percent of the votes counted, Figueres of the National Liberation Party, who served as President of the country from 1994 to 1998, was in the lead with 27.29 percent of the vote, according to Xinhua news agency, citing TSE numbers. With 16.66 percent of the vote, former Finance Minister Rodrigo Chaves of the Social Democratic Progress Party came in second.
According to the TSE, Fabricio Alvarado of the New Republic party came in third place with 14.93 percent of the vote, and the gap between Chaves and Alvarado has been expanding.
A run-off election will be place on April 3 if none of the contenders received more than 40% of the vote in the first round to win the country's presidency. The victor of the runoff will take over as president of Costa Rica on May 8, succeeding Carlos Alvarado, who is currently in office.
