PARIS: The first round of the 2022 French presidential elections will take place on Sunday, and if none of the 12 eligible candidates receives an absolute majority, a run-off between the top two candidates from the first round will take place in April 24.

The Constitutional Council, the country's top constitutional authority, published the final list of all 12 candidates, including incumbent President Emmanuel Macron, in early March, the report said. Each of these candidates had obtained at least 500 letters of support from mayors and other municipal officials.

As per a poll released on April 6 by market research firm IPSOS, Macron is expected to win the first round, followed by Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally and Jean-Luc Melenchon of the left-wing La France Insoumise (Unsubmissive France).

The  IPSOS said, the themes that most intrigue French voters include purchasing power, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the environment, the health-care system, immigration, and socioeconomic inequities.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), 48.8 million French residents have signed up to vote in the presidential elections. 47.05 million have registered on municipal lists, and 1.43 million have enrolled on consular lists in other countries.
