MEXICO:: According to media reports and government officials, a fuel tanker exploded in northern Haiti, killing more than 40 people and injuring dozens more.The explosion occurred in Cap-Haitien, Haiti's northern port city, Prime Minister Ariel Henry tweeted on Tuesday, expressing his condolences on behalf of the government and the Haitian people.
He said that field hospitals will be deployed to the area to assist those who have been harmed, as well as a three-day national mourning service to honor the victims. According to accounts, the fuel truck overturned after trying to dodge a motorcycle, and local residents raced to collect the tanker's gas, according to Patrick Almonor, Deputy Mayor of Cap-Haitien.
The Deputy Mayor said, the explosion also torched nearly 20 residences nearby, and he expects the death toll to continue to rise because victims who died in their homes have yet to be counted.
Claude Joseph, Haiti's former Prime Minister, tweeted on Tuesday that the news had "shattered" him and that he shared the "pain and sadness of all the people." The blast occurred as the Caribbean country was experiencing fuel shortages. Hospitals in Port-au-Prince and other locations reported limited fuel supplies needed to power generators that keep services running earlier this year.
