New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced the approval of new projects worth Rs. 1.6 lakh crore in northeast India.

Roads, ropeways, RoBs, and significant bridges over the River Brahmaputra and other bodies of water are among the projects being reviewed, said Gadkari, who spoke during the press conference that concluded the review of NH projects in the North East Region in Guwahati.

In a statement released by his ministry on Friday, Gadkari claimed that multi-modal logistics parks had also been suggested for Silchar, Assam, and Udaipur, Tripura.

Under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,  Gadkari said, efforts are being made to close the connectivity gap in the northeast and boost the region's transportation infrastructure.

Around 50 wayside amenities and 50 view sites are also being created, the minister said.

Once completed, the projects significantly benefit the region's economy and tourism industry, the statement quoted the minister as saying.

The union minister on 9 November 2022 endorsed a slew of new road projects, valued at Rs68,000 crore, in 4 Northeastern states to make international standard surface connectivity.

“New projects valued Rs.50,000 cr for Assam, Rs 9,000 cr for Meghalaya, Rs 5,000 cr for Nagaland and Rs4,000 cr for Sikkim were sanctioned. Our target is to change the whole scenario of road transport in northeast India by 2024. We aim to make roads of international standard of excellence in this region," Gadkari said.
